Collingwood Magpies

The Magpies, the working man's club, are the most popular sporting club in Australia, with a fanatical following where ever they play. They were formed in 1892 and won their first and last VFA premiership in 1896 prior to entering the breakaway VFL in 1897.

Collingwood has won 14 premierships, including 4 in a row from 1927, 1928, 1929  & 1930 an unmatched record. Others included 1902, 1903, 1910, 1919, 1935 and 1936 (Covers 1 and 2).

Post war however has not been as successful having only won in 1953, 1958 and 1990. In that time they have been runners up 11 times leading to the term "the Collywobbles" for their failure to win the big games.

1982 cover was issued showing their pre-centenary logo.

The Collingwood Centenary in 1992 was marked by a special cover and commemorative postmark and permanent pictorial postmark. The Centenary of the Magpies first match in the VFA on 7th May 1892 was also commemorated by a special cachet.

1996 Collimgwood AFL Centenary Cover

Above shows the AFL Centenary Cover postmarked with the Collingwood Centenary Postmark APM29075 introduced on the 23rd April 1996 to celebrate the Centenary of the AFL. This cover was sold cancelled by Australia Post as the change of location of the postmark from Collingwood to Abbotsford was not announced prior to the introduction of the cancel. The actual cancel used, seen at the left, had a different date stamp.

The Magpies chose Bob Rose on the cover of their stamp Booklet and Nathan Buckley on their Postcard and maximum card.

As part of the Centenary celebrations was the naming of the Team of the Century. Collingwood was very upset that not one player was named in this team. Consequently they named their own Team of the Century at a Gala Dinner on the 14th June 1997.

Collingwood's home ground has been Victoria Park for the club's entire history although from the 2000 season onwards it now plays all its games at the MCG.

The 2000 season was opened with a New Years Eve Millennium Challenge between Carlton and Collingwood as part of the New Millennium celebrations. Unfortunately the game was easily won by the blues with blue Brendan Fevola kicking a record 12 goals.

On the 7th March 2000 the inaugural meeting of the "Premiership Players Club" was held at the MCG to help raise funds for charity. Three Carlton players were included in the 20 players pictured on the A4 sheet of 20 P stamps of the millennium issue. They were Thorold Merrett and Bill Serong. The stamps were also displayed on a set of 20 first day covers by Havilah Enterprises.

The 25th May 2000 marked  the release of club and individual 2000 Personalised Stamps.

On the 28th March 2001 the second annual  meeting of the "Premiership Players Club" was held at the MCG to help raise funds for charity. Two Collingwood players were included in the 20 players pictured on the A4 sheet of 20 P stamps of the globe and map issue. They were Tony Shaw and Bob Rose. The stamps were also displayed on a set of 20 first day covers by First Class Collectables.

The Magpies started the 2001 season with a rush. The 30th March 2001 saw the release of the 2001 Personalised Stamps. After definite improvement they just finished out of the finals.

The 2002 season showed continuing improvement and the Pies looked like making the eight. On the 15th May the Club 2002 Personalised Stamps were released.

On the 27th March 2002 the third annual  meeting of the "Premiership Players Club" was held at the MCG to help raise funds for charity. They were Barry Harrison and Michael Gayfer. The stamps were also displayed on a set of 20 first day covers by First Class Collectables.

Their form dropped off at the end of the season but they still finished fourth on the ladder. This meant a final in Adelaide against the all conquering Port Poweradelaide. Against the odds they won going on to the preliminary final where they defeated the Crows. This meant a Grand Final meeting with the Lions.

After being runners-up in 2002 big things were expected for 2003. In April the 2003 Personalised Stamps were released. The Annual Premiership Players Club P stamp Sheet of 20 players was released on the 26th March 2003. The Collingwood players featured were Brian Gray and Neil Mann. Wayne Richardson was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Chris Tarrant and Nathan Buckley won All Australian Selection.

The highpoint for  Collingwood was captain Nathan Buckley, winning the Brownlow Medal in a three way tie with Adelaide skipper Mark Ricciuto and Sydney ruckman Adam Goodes. First Class Collectibles  released a cover of  Nathan Buckley.

2004 started slowly for the Pies. The Hall of Fame was named at a function at the Palladium Ballroom, Crown Casino on the 3rd April 2004. In mid April the 2004 Personalised Stamps were released. This year they were a booklet of 20 stamps showing 10 players, rather than the A4 sheet. Lou Richards and Ron Richards were included in the 20 players of the "Premiership Players Club". James Clement made the All Australian Team.

A Commemorative Covers showing Buckley was released by First Class Collectables. First Class Collectables issued covers  to commemorate the Best and Fairest winners including James Clement.
