2002 Grand
Final |
After
shock wins in the Qualifying and Preliminary final against the South Australian
Teams, the magpies made it into the Grand Final against Brisbane. The contest
was proposed as a Victorian Team against the Interstate Team (with an unfair
salary cap) and the Victorian Sports Minister, Justin Madden, an old Carlton
player, implored all Victorians to barrack for the "Pies".
The weather was terrible with a maximum
temperature of 9 degrees C and hail predicted. The game was tight with the
scores fluctuating all day. In the end the Lions ran out 9 point winners.
Nathan Buckley won the Norm Smith Medal for
Best on the Ground. A cover by "Coversplease" is shown below. |

A Set of 22 Souvenir Covers for the Collingwood Magpies
gallant defeat in the AFL Grand Final was released by "Covers Please". All
covers were postmarked The MCG 30th September 2002 (the Monday after the
victory). 16 of the covers have the player Personalised-stamp while the other
six players (Johnson, Steinford, Scotland, Clement, Betharis and McKee) did not
appear on the Magpies P-stamp sheet and are on covers with an ordinary stamp.
