What's New in 2005

International Rules
In a change of tactics Australia choose a team of smaller mobile players, not bases on the All Australian Team. It proved to be a coaching triumph with Australia winning both games by a record 36pts at Subiaco and 21 pts at Telstra Dome.
First Class Collectables released a Commemorative Cover of Andrew McLeod  and of the Team.

2005 SANFL Premiers
Central Districts defeated Eagles by 28 pts at the Grand Final played at AAMI Stadium on the 2nd October 2005.
A Commemorative
Cover  was released by First Class Collectables.

2005 AFL Premiers
On 24th September 2005 the AFL's ugly duckling, the Sydney Swans won their first AFL Premiership in 72 years by defeating the West Coast Eagles by 4 points in a dour tight struggle. The final score was Sydney 8.10.58 to the Eagles 7.12.54. Australia Post issued a Souvenir Stamp Sheet on the 26th September 2005. This follows a precedent that was started in 2004 with a souvenir sheet to celebrate Port Adelaide's Victory.

 

 

FirstClass Collectables issued covers for each Sydney player, the Coach and the team. Chris Judd of the West Coast Eagles won the Norm Smith Medal. Coversplease released covers for each Sydney player, the Coach and the team, as well as the defeated West Coast Eagles along with the Norm Smith Medalist.
After the Swans won the 2005 Premiership the
2005 P stamp booklet was Overprinted to celebrate the win.

Brownlow Medal
On 19th September 2005 Ben Cousins won the Brownlow Medal for the second consecutive year for the West Coast Eagles.

2005 WAFL Premiers
East Fremantle defeated Claremont by 56 pts at the Grand Final played at Subiaco on the 18th September 2005.

The Ultimate Showdown
Adelaide defeated Port
in the qualifying final played at AAMI Stadium on the 10th September 2005.

Best &Fairest
First Class Collectables issued covers  to commemorate the Best and Fairest winners.

2005 All Australian Team
On the 5th September 2005 the 2005 All Australian Team was chosen. The Premiership Coach automatically becomes the Coach.
A set of 22 covers was released by First Class Collectables.

2005 Premiership Players Club
On the 1st September 2005 the 2005 Premiership Players Club P stamp Sheetlet was released.

NAB Rising Star
On the 31st August 2005 Brett Deledio of Richmond was name the 2005 NAB Rising Star.

Showdown XVIII.
Adelaide defeated Port by 7 points in Showdown XVIII played at AAMI Stadium on the 13th August 2005.

Channel 7 Adelaide 40th Anniversary
In August 2005 Channel 7 Adelaide produced a
SES to celebrate its 40th Anniversary. The surrounds in the upper right hand corner showed a photo of Graeme Cornes (ex Crows Coach), Mark Riccuito (Crows Captain) and Chris McDermott (Ex Crows Captain). The P stamps show Bruce Abernathy (Port Adelaide Magpies, North Melbourne, Collingwood, Adelaide), Bruce McAvaney (AFL Commentator), Graeme Goddings (Sports Presenter, Crows Club Ambassador) and Chris Dittmar (AFL Commentator). First Class Collectables released covers for Bruce Abernathy, Bruce McAvaney, Graeme Goddings and Chris Dittmar.

Crawford 250 & Lucas 200 games
On the weekend commencing 6th August 2005 Shane Crawford played his 250th game for the Hawthorn Hawks, while Scott Lucas played his 200th Game for the Bombers.

Indigenous Team of the Century
The Indigenous Team Of the Century was named at a lavish function at the Palladium on the 1st August 2005. Poly Farmer was named Captain and Barry Cable as Coach. It was attended by the PM, John Howard.
First Class Collectables produced a set of covers. Signed player covers were
Gavin Wanganeen
, Peter Matera, Michael Long, Michael O'Loughlin, Andrew McLeod and Byron Pickett. Similar philatelic covers are displayed on the Indigenous TOC Page.

Johnson 250, Buckley 250 & Power 150 games
On the weekend commencing 29th July 2005 Brad Johnson played his 250th game for the Western Bulldogs, Nathan Buckley played his 250th game for Collingwood, while Luke Power played his 150th Game for the Lions.

Ben Cousins 200 games
On 16th July 2005 Ben Cousins played his 200th game for the West Coast Eagles.

On 24th June 2005 Matthew Lloyd played his 200th game for the Essendon Bombers.

Hall of Fame Inductees
The 2005 Hall of Fame inductees were named on the 7th June 2005. The most controversial was Geelong's Star Gary Ablett.

West Adelaide Hall of Fame
On 10th May 2005 the West Adelaide Football Club "The Bloods" inducted members into their Hall of Fame.

Matthew Richardson 200 games
On 1st May 2005 Matthew Richardson played his 200th game for the Richmond Tigers.

Adelaide defeated Port by 68 points in Showdown XVII played at AAMI Stadium on the 10th April 2005.

Wizard Cup
On 12th March 2005 the underrated Carlton defeated the West Coast Eagles in the Pre season Competition, the Wizard Cup. The Blues won 1.14.18.111 to 1.11.9.84. First Class Collectables issued a
Cover to commemorate the win.

Stamp Bulletin No 279 announced that the 2005 AFL Stamp Booklets would be released from Late March through till Mid April. The date stated on AP website is 1st April 2005.
