South Australian National Football League

The first recorded game in South Australia was played in 1860 under the co-ordination of the just formed Adelaide Football Club. In 1870 the first game was played by Port Adelaide on its presidents property on the Glanville Hall Estate. In 1877 the SA Football Association was formed with 13 teams. In 1878 Norwood was founded. Port Adelaide has been the most successful team in Australian Football both in South Australia and nationally. They have won 36 Premierships. South Adelaide Envelope

The 1980 Grand Final between Norwood and Port Adelaide was commemorated by a specially designed cover. Port Adelaide won the premiership.

The 1997 Grand Final was played between Norwood and Port Adelaide with the "Redlegs" winning easily. The victory was commemorated by the release of  100 privately produced covers by Havilah Enterprises and postmarked with the West Lakes PM (PMP 565 ) the site of the game.

Port Adelaide contested the 1998 Grand Final and were successful over Sturt. The win was commemorated by the release of 100 privately produced covers by Havilah Enterprises and postmarked with the West Lakes PM (PMP 565 ) the site of the game. The Centenary of the SANFL's  Best and Fairest Medal, the Magarey Medal, won by South Adelaide's Andrew Osborn was commemorated by the release of 50 privately produced covers by Havilah Enterprises.

Port Adelaide were able to turn the tables on Norwood for the 1999 Grand Final to win their 36th Flag. The victory was commemorated by the release of  50 privately produced covers by Havilah Enterprises and postmarked with the West Lakes PM (PMP 565 ) the site of the game.

The 2000 Grand Final, the last of the millennium, was fought out between Central Districts and West Torrens. Victory went to the Central District Bulldogs to win their first premiership. The victory was commemorated by the release of  50 privately produced covers by Havilah Enterprises.

The 2001 Grand Final was again fought out between Central Districts and West Torrens. Again Victory went to the Central District Bulldogs to win Back to Back premierships. The victory was commemorated by the release of  privately produced covers by First Class Collectables. The cover is shown below. The 2001 Magarey Medal was won by Tony Brown and Ryan O'Connor, both players for Port Adelaide.

On the 13th August 2002 the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) inducted 114 people into the South Australian Football Hall of Fame at the inaugural 'West End South Australian Football Hall of Fame Presentation Dinner' in the Park Convention Centre at AAMI Stadium. First Class Collectables released covers of Fos Williams, Shine Hosking,  Barry Robran and Tony McGuiness  to commemorate the event.

The 2002 Magarey Medal was won by Tim Weatherald and Jade Sheedy, both players for Sturt. Sturt  was also successful in the SA Grand Final defeating Central 13.14.92 to 6.9.45.

On the 5th October 2003 Central District won their third Premiership from the last four years with a comfortable victory over West Adelaide. First Class Collectibles  released a cover of the Premiership. The competition celebrated its 125th Anniversary with a special cover of 100 with an insert of all SANFL Premiers displayed.

On 8th September 2004 Channel Nine South Australia released a SES commemorating their 45th Anniversary of their going to air. The Sheet margin contained the headline "NWS-9 Wins Sole TV Footy Rights." and a picture of former Crow's Captain, Mark Bickley. The stamp selvedge showed Kym Dillon, their sports reporter and former SANFL Footballer in the Early Days and the Present  postmarked by the Nine Commemorative Postmark. Australia Post also approved a Slogan PM and inkject Cancel.

Paul Thomas of Central Districts won the Best and Fairest in the SANFL Competition, the Magarey Medal in 2004. A cover was released by StampOz.

The 2005 Hall of Fame inductees were named on the 7th June 2005. First Class Collectables produced a set of covers. The inductees included Max Basheer

In August 2005 Channel 7 Adelaide produced a SES to celebrate its 40th Anniversary. The surrounds in the upper right hand corner showed a photo of Graeme Cornes (ex Crows Coach), Mark Riccuito (Crows Captain) and Chris McDermott (Ex Crows Captain). The P stamps show Bruce Abernathy (Port Adelaide Magpies, North Melbourne, Collingwood, Adelaide), Bruce McAvaney (AFL Commentator), Graeme Goddings (Sports Presenter, Crows Club Ambassador) and Chris Dittmar (AFL Commentator). First Class Collectables released covers for Bruce Abernathy, Bruce McAvaney, Graeme Goddings and Chris Dittmar.

Central Districts defeated Eagles by 28 pts at the Grand Final played at AAMI Stadium on the 2nd October 2005. A Commemorative Cover  was released by First Class Collectables.
