The Lions travelled to Melbourne to
meet the reigning premiers, the Essendon Bombers. The trip started with a
fairytale Grand Final Parade through the streets of Melbourne on the Friday,
with the large majority of the supporters barracking for the Lions. Conspicuous
in the crowd were the scarves, jumpers and flags of the pre merger Fitzroy
Lions. On Grand Final Day the weather was hot with an expected maximum of 27
degrees, more like Brisbane weather. The Lions dominated the game early but were
very inaccurate in front of goal. By half time the Bombers had a 14 point lead.
It was thought that the Lions superior fitness would prevail in the second half
and this proved to be the case with the Brisbane team winning by 26 points. The
final score was 15.18.108 to 12.10.82.
A celebratory dinner was held at the Palladium at
the Crown Casino after the players had been presented to the fans at the
National Tennis Centre.
The next day the Lions took the Premiership cup
to the Brunswick Street Oval, the traditional home of the Fitzroy Lions, to a
crowd of 7-8,000 persons, some with Lion's memorabilia dating back to pre-war
days and the Lion's last flag in 1944. It was then back to Brisbane for a
celebration at the Gabba. This was latter in the week followed by a parade
through the streets of Brisbane and the presentation of the Keys of the City by
the Lord Mayor. Latter their was a civic reception by the premier.
First Class Collectables issued the following commemorative cover and a
cover showing the Norm Smith Medalist,
Shaun Hart.
