The 2001 International Series
Following the success of
Australia's trip to Ireland in 2000, both the AFL and GAA decided to continue
the concept. The first test was played on the
12th October 2001at
the MCG.
Ireland won by 6 points scoring 2.13.8.59 to
1.13.9.53 but the match was marked by controversy with an Irish Official
suspended for pushing the Australian Umpire. A cover by First Class
Collectibles was released to commemorate the match. |

2001 South Australian Premiership
On
7th October 2001
Central Districts won back to back Premierships defeating West Torrens. A
cover by First Class Collectibles was released to commemorate the win.

2001 AFL Premiership
On
29th September 2001
the Mighty Brisbane Lions won Brisbane's First and the Lion's ninth premiership
against Essendon in front of over 91,000 people at the home of Football, the
MCG. The occasion was commemorated by the release of 22 covers by "Covers
Please" and two covers by "Lobo8". Two covers by First Class Collectibles were
also released to commemorate the win. The 0K and 1K Arts Council Booklets were
overprinted with "Congratulations Brisbane AFL Winners 2001" |

2001 Brownlow Medallist
The Brownlow Medal
presentation on the 24th September 2001
was split between two cities, Melbourne
and Brisbane, due to the Ansett Collapse. Brisbane won its second Brownlow with
Jason Akermanis claiming the medal. A cover by First Class Collectibles was
released to commemorate the win. |
North Melbourne Team of the
Century
On the 30th of August 2001
at the Crown Casino, North Melbourne unveiled their
Team of the Century. It included current player Wayne Carey as Captain.

Showdown X - Port Power v Adelaide Crows
On the
5th August 2001
the final match of the annual Showdown between
the two Adelaide teams was played at Football Park. For the first time a team
won both games. A cover by First Class Collectibles was released to
commemorate the team. |
Geelong Team of the Century
On the
22nd June 2001
the Geelong Football Club at a gala dinner at the Crown Palladium announced
there Team of the Century. A cover by First Class Collectibles was released
to commemorate the team. |
The Greatest Team of the Greatest
Club
Port Adelaide Greatest Team was presented at a dinner at the Adelaide Convention
Centre on 16th June 2001.

Centenary
of Federation Games
On the weekend of
5th and 6th May 2001 for
round 6 the AFL mimicked the round played on the 9th May 1901 to celebrate the
opening of parliament. The game on Sunday 6th between Collingwood and Carlton
was played for the Federation Cup. The Saturday game was between Brisbane (for
Fitzroy) and Geelong. The logo was painted on all grounds next to the AFL logo.

Fitzroy
Team of the Century
On the 3rd May 2001
the Fitzroy Football Club, in association with the Brisbane Lions, at a gala
dinner at the Crown Palladium announced there Team of the Century. Alastiar
Lynch was the only current player included on the interchange bench. A cover
by First Class Collectibles was released to commemorate the team. |

Stewart Loewe's 300th game
On the
5th May 2001
against Sydney Stewart Loewe played his 300th game. The Saints celebrated with a
win against Sydney. Three weeks later he was joined by his previous
co-captain, Nathan Burke. Little did they realize that knee injuries would play
havoc with the rest of their season. A cover by First Class Collectibles was
released to commemorate the player. |
Hawthorn Team of the Century
On the
27th April 2001
the Hawthorn Football Club at a gala dinner at the Crown Palladium announced
there Team of the Century. A cover by First Class Collectibles was released
to commemorate the team. |
Saint Kilda Team of the Century
On the
5th April 2001
St Kilda Football Club at a gala dinner at the Crown Palladium announced there
Team of the Century. In contrast to most other clubs, the Team contained three
current players in Harvey, Burke and Loewe. A cover by First Class
Collectibles was released to commemorate the team. |
AFL Footy Stamps
Sheets of 20 x 45c Australia and Globe stamps (Nature &
Nation, May 2000) were personalised for each of the 16 AFL clubs. The borders
are decorated with club colours and the AFL and team logos. Each tab has an
image of one of 20 players. Sheets were sold through post offices, rather than
the clubs. There were released from the Philatelic Bureau on the
30th March 2001 and 19th April 2001 from General
Post Offices. First Class Collectibles issued a set of 20 FDCs for each team.

Premiership Players Club
The Premiership Players Club, on the
28th March 2001, for
the second year issued an A4 sheet of P Stamps to raise funds for charity. A
FDC of the A4 Sheets and of the 20 Players was issued by First Class
Collectibles. |
Preseason Ansett Cup
The preseason Ansett Cup, for the second year, was run as a round robin
competition rather than a Knockout Competition. The two finalist were both
relative newcomers and for the first time a grand final was played outside
Victoria at Football Park in Adelaide on the 17th March
2001. It also did not include a Victorian Team. On the night the home
side was much too powerful and over ran the tame Lions by 85 points. A
special commemorative cover was produced by First Class Collectibles.
