The AFL celebrated the Centenary of Federation
with Federation Football over the weekend of round 6 of the 2001 AFL season.
Round 6 was fixtured to resemble, as closely as possible, a round of football
which was specially scheduled on May 9 1901 as part of the celebrations around
the Opening of Parliament in Melbourne. Two matches from that round were
earmarked as Federation Football matches - Brisbane Lions (formerly
Fitzroy) v Geelong at the Gabba on Saturday May 5, Collingwood v Carlton at the
MCG Sunday May 6.
All senior players competing in those two matches received a commemorative
medals, courtesy of Centenary of Federation, Victoria.
The Collingwood-Carlton match on Sunday was contested for the Federation Cup
which was won by Collingwood.
A curtainraiser featuring Queensland Under 18 v Western Jets was played prior to
the Brisbane - Geelong match at the Gabba while the Bendigo Pioneers played the
Northern Territory Thunder Under 18 prior to the Essendon-West Coast match at
Colonial Stadium on Sunday May 6. All curtainraiser players received a
special Federation Football commemorative medals.
All AFL grounds carried the Centenary of Federation logo alongside the AFL logo.
They were, the MCG, Colonial Stadium, the Gabba, Football Park in Adelaide,
Subiaco in Perth and York Park in Tasmania. |
