Connacht Province |

History
Connacht is the smallest and most westerly of the
four provinces. It includes counties Galway, Mayo,
Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim. The name of the
province derives from the Connachta, the
large tribal grouping which dominated the west and
north of the island in the first few centuries A.D.
They claimed descent from the mythical Conn, brother
of Eogan, the ancestor of the rulers of Munster, the
Eoghanachta.The booklet at left is part of the
An Post/GAA Football team of the Millennium. It
contains the Connacht players that were picked in
the Team of the Millennium. There are 2 stamps each
for Galway Players, Enda Colleran and Sean Purcell and 2 stamps
each for Mayo
Players, Sean Flanagan and Tom Langan. The back of the booklet
contains the All-Ireland Championships won by
Connacht Counties. |

Counties
Galway
Galway has won 9
All-Ireland Championships, the last being in 2001.

Enda Colleran was picked in the An
Post/GAA Football team of the Millennium.
Enda Colleran was Captain of
Galway in two of its three in a row All-Ireland
Championships in 1965 and 1966. His long kicking set
up attacks and he was also excellent as a defensive
player.

Sean Purcell was picked in the An
Post/GAA Football team of the Millennium.
He was a versatile player, being
able to play many positions. He was a member of the
All-Ireland Galway Championship team in 1956.

Mayo
Mayo has won three championships, the last
being in 1951. |

Sean Flangan was picked in
the An Post/GAA Football team of the Millennium.
Sean Flanagan captained Mayo in
its glory days of back to back championships in
1950 and 1951.

Tom Langan was picked in
the An Post/GAA Football team of the Millennium.
As a boy he won Mayo's Senior
Championship and was a member of its glory period
from 1948 to 1955.

Padraic Carney was nominated
for induction into the GAA Hall of Fame in 2001.
He joins the 15 footballers from the Millennium
Team and the two inductees in 2002.
He played a vital roll in Mayo in
1948 to 1954. He won two All-Ireland titles in 1950
and 1951.

Roscommon
Roscommon has won two
championships, the last being in 1944.
Other Connacht Counties of Leitrim and
Sligo have not been
successful in the All-Ireland Football Championships. |
